Weekend Off (to Ferndale and Port Townsend)

This past weekend was the first one EVER where Matt had the weekend off…no negotiating, no trading shifts…he had it OFF! We celebrated with a trip up to my parent’s to visit with them and some other relatives that were in town. Friday night, after a 3 ½ hour drive (traffic was awful) we had a campfire dinner on the beach out in Birch Bay. Hot dogs and salads and s’mores. Yum. Matt also brought along his fish clothes from work to burn in the fire! What a great way to finish that chapter of his life.

Saturday morning we got up bright and early to a cloudy day. We were hoping for sun but went out to Port Townsend anyway. It was pretty chilly hanging out on the beach near the ferry dock, but we had a blast throwing rocks and watching for seals. Once we got to Port Townsend we headed to Fort Worden for a picnic lunch near the lighthouse. We wandered the beach and climbed around Battery Kinzie, then drove over to the USO Hall. There were people scuttling around setting up for a wedding reception, so it was fun to see our venue in action. The hall is beautiful. Every time I see it I like it more and more! It is going to be perfect. It is going to be a tight squeeze though, I think the guest list will still need some slimming down…

After the USO hall we walked up to the wedding ceremony site at Battery Tolles. Again, every time I see this it just becomes more and more perfect for us. We measured some things out and discussed some decoration ideas. Even on a cloudy day it was beautiful and unique.

After the fort we headed to town for ice cream at Don’s Pharmacy. Epic ice cream may be more appropriate! 11 of us lined up at the counter and ordered the MASSIVE sundaes. Sooo good! Matt and I shared an Oreo hot fudge sundae that was amazing.

We perused an art festival in Coupeville, then drove home to Ferndale for a dinner of pulled pork and pie. I was exhausted, and nursing a headache all weekend, so Matt and I did not stay up to play games. 10 hours of sleep that night was much needed.

Sunday was low key. Waffles with fresh sour cherries. We picked blueberries and played Settlers. Walked to get the paper. Transferred photos. It was a nice slow day that ended with lasagna and pie, and then a drive back home to Seattle. What a great weekend.
